What Happens Around the Campfire during Summer Camp

What Happens Around the Campfire during Summer Camp

My favorite time of day is when the sun begins to set behind the mountains and the air begins to chill just a little. And at Summer Camp, there is no better feeling than being the first person to arrive at the campfire pit to light the campfire. Is it the smell of the pine needles or the smoke? Is it the distant chatter of campers getting ready for the evening by dressing in long pants, putting on a jacket or grabbing a blanket? Is it the smell of bug spray lingering throughout the camp? I think it is the anticipation of knowing the campers were going to have a special opportunity to draw closer to the Lord through songs, dancing and stories.

Campfires are transformational and powerful, filled with room for the Holy Spirit to move in a camper's heart. When a group of campers are gathered around the flickering flames under a blanket of stars they open their hearts and minds to sharing more than any other time during camp. I have discovered over the years the exciting things that happen around the campfire each year at Summer Camp and I thought it would be fun to share with you those things.

1. Pure Joy- The songs sung around a campfire are unlike anything you will experience anywhere. From The Other Day I Saw A Bear to Rolling over the Billows, these songs get you moving and grooving. Campers have such a great time stirring up dust as they sing and dance to songs that help them forget about the things beyond the camp. And most likely they can't wait to get home and teach you that silly song too.

2. Pure Love- Campers have an opportunity to listen to other campers or leaders talk about the love of Jesus and how Jesus has loved them unconditionally. Nothing beats the flicker of light from the burning embers behind someone talking about Jesus’ love and peace. I still remember that night at Junior High Camp rededicating my life to Christ standing beside the campfire.

3. Pure Peace- The warmth of the fire burning allows campers to focus on the simplicity of the night and this allows the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts. The campers have a peace that washes over them and they are able to walk away a little lighter each night.

When your camper returns home from camp this Summer, make sure to spend some time talking with them about the times they had at campfire or any decisions they may have made anytime during the week. Even better, set aside time this Summer to have a campfire of your own. You can even sing those silly songs together and share your faith story with them.

Sabrina Harrison directed Summer Camp for kids in 4th thru 6th grade for 10 years at Cathedral Pines Camp in the mountains of Idaho. Her favorite memories at camp were set around the campfire in the cool evenings. Her favorite campfire songs are Oh, You Can't Get To Heaven and I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N.
