8 ways to Enjoy the Great Outdoors as a Family

Family Hike

Our Seeds Kids Worship team loves to do things outdoors and on November 17th it is National Take a Hike Day and we thought it would be a fun way to share 8 ways you can enjoy the great outdoors with your family.

Time outdoors builds memories and makes life more enjoyable.
The benefits of spending time outdoors, whether as a family or on your own, are plentiful. These include:

  1. Good health: Being outdoors can help you get exercise while enjoying the fresh air and sun. It’s also a good way to connect with God’s creation—something that’s good for both your body and mind.

  2. Improved mood: Spending time in nature can help you feel calmer and happier.

  3. Sharper cognition: People who spend even brief amounts of time in green space have improved concentration and performance in cognitive tasks.

  4. Memory-making moments: Going on outdoor adventures with family members helps create lasting memories that can be shared throughout your lives together.

Here are 8 ways to move more while enjoying the great outdoors:

1. Become a photographer. Grab your camera (or your phone) and set out to capture beautiful and interesting sights. Simply snap away at anything that piques your interest. The photos will be a reminder of time well spent and you’ll probably clock more steps than you realize.

2. Collect shells or rocks. If you’re near a beach, it’s easy to walk for miles while searching for shells. It’s also a great way to relax. If you’re not near a beach, look for interesting rocks. Collecting a rainbow of leaves in the fall is also a fun activity that will keep you moving.

3. Explore a park. There are thousands of state and local parks in the U.S. and most provide countless opportunities to enjoy nature. Stroll along a popular path or hike less-traveled terrain. Either way, you’ll enjoy a feast for your senses while benefiting your physical and mental health.

4. Go on a scavenger hunt. Head out on a walk and see what you can find along the way. To make the activity even more fun, do it with a group and make a list of items to search for ahead of time. See who can find the most items on the list.

5. Fly a kite. All you need is a patch of grass and a light wind and you can feel like a kid again as you work to keep your kite soaring in the sky. It’s fun, relaxing and you’ll get a few steps in while you play.

6. Have a picnic. Picnics are a great way to spend time outdoors as a family. They’re also a great way of bringing different generations together, since everyone loves food. If you don’t have the space or budget for an outdoor table, try laying out blankets on the ground instead. This will help keep things casual and comfortable (and save money). Games like “I Spy” can be played while picnicking—it’s easy enough to do while sitting on blankets in the grass or along a lakeshore.

7. Create an outdoor worship experience. Grab your bluetooth speaker, your phone, any instrument you play, your voice and let’s create a worship experience that will glorify God and might spark some excitement with your neighbors. What a fun way to sing your praises and spend time together. Here’s a worship set of Seeds Kids Worship songs to get you started:

8. Take a Hike. Want a bigger challenge than just a walk? Why not take a hike?  Look for different hiking trails in and around your area. Find the best hiking trails to explore with your family to have an unforgettable experience enjoying God’s creation.

Now, get out there and enjoy National Take a Hike Day!
